Retirement Livery at Lowertown Farm
One of Devon's original specialist retirement livery yards, Lowertown Farm was established in 2009 and is nestled in the beautiful Dart Valley, tucked away from main roads. We offer the ideal setting to retire your horse.
At Lowertown Farm, we provide inclusive packages tailored to suit each horse’s individual needs during their retirement. We believe every horse deserves a loving and caring home, regardless of age or the reason for retirement. Horses live in a herd environment with companions carefully matched to their personalities and seasonal grazing requirements.
We pride ourselves on offering individual, specialist care while allowing horses the freedom to simply be horses. Your horse will enjoy a secure, tranquil, and relaxed setting. Our well-maintained fields feature natural shelter, gentle slopes, thick hedgerows for browsing, and troughs filled with fresh spring water. Thanks to our location on Dartmoor, we experience minimal flies in the summer and enjoy gentle breezes on warm days—keeping the horses comfortable and content.

Turnout & Lifestyle
We offer 24/7 turnout, which is particularly beneficial for older horses prone to stiffness, swelling, respiratory issues, or arthritis. Horses live out during the summer, and those needing additional care during the winter are brought into spacious, well-ventilated stables. Even in winter, stabled horses enjoy an average of nine hours of turnout each day to keep them mobile and happy.
Feeding & Land Management
We follow a comprehensive field management programme—rolling, fertilising, weed control, hedge trimming, and pasture restoration after winter. Our full worming programme, including worm egg counts, is supported by Westgate Laboratories. We produce all our own haylage on-site, ensuring it’s harvested under ideal conditions and of the highest quality. We also provide basic hard feed when required, and are happy to administer owner-supplied supplements, medications, or special diets.
Veterinary & Routine Care
We work closely with trusted local vets, farriers, physiotherapists, and an experienced equine dentist (who once kept his own horse with us). All are available at short notice. You’re also welcome to continue using your preferred professionals. We have clear emergency protocols in place and keep owners fully informed if veterinary care is needed.
Owner Involvement
There are no restrictions on visiting your horse. We regularly share updates via phone, email, and our Facebook page—with plenty of photos—so you can stay connected, even if you’re far away. Many of our clients live abroad, and we’re happy to recommend reliable nationwide horse transport companies to help bring your horse to us.
Our Background
Hannah studied equestrianism at Duchy College in Cornwall and has over 30 years’ experience with a wide variety of horses, including ex-racehorses, working hunters, polo ponies, and feral Dartmoor ponies. Her love for horses began at age two, after winning a raffle for a pony ride. Hannah and Luke live on-site and have built strong, trusted relationships with all our service providers. As we specialise exclusively in retirement livery, your horse will not experience the stress of busy comings and goings common at traditional livery yards.
We offer stabled retirement livery during the winter months (November–March), when space allows.
Our livery service is tailored to the individual, and because we value quality care over quantity, we keep our yard intentionally small. This allows us to offer the extra TLC every horse deserves.
Please do not hesitate to get in contact to discuss any of our services!
We are very lucky to have an excellent reputation and therefore often have a waiting list but do get in touch. Testimonials from our clients can be found on the LiveryList website here

"My horse deserves every moment of his retirement. He gave me so much pleasure (and challenge!) during his working years that when he needed to retire I just wanted him to be able to be a horse again, and spend his latter years being cared for as if I had him at home. This is exactly what Hannah and Luke provide. Their care and attention is excellent but the horses are still all allowed to do their own thing and be themselves. I looked for a while before finding this yard and I've nothing but praise for the attention that's given 24/7"
"When the time came to retire my horse I looked at many yards. Lowertown Farm appealed to me immediately due to it’s small size and the approach of both Hannah and Luke to the care they provide. Care is positive and kind, and individualised, and Hannah takes a lot of time to get to know your horse – his likes and dislikes, position in a herd, personality and any issues they may have. The yard is extremely peaceful, visiting is a pleasure and my horse settled in almost immediately. He always has a big smile on his face when I see him and, having had a previous career in dressage he’s loving spending time just being a horse. Grazing and group dynamics are always appropriate, and changed as and when necessary, and communication is timely and professional. I would recommend to anyone."
My boy has been with Hannah and Luke for around 5 years now. Although I can’t get to see him as often as I’d like to, I never have to worry because I know he’s in such good hands. He really is living the best life and the kind of life that all horses deserve. He’s in a settled herd, living out and in beautiful, peaceful surroundings. My horse means the world to me and so giving him a long and happy retirement was of paramount importance. I’m always so grateful for the exemplary care he gets at Lowertown Farm.
"Our very pampered Pony George has been in our lives for our 14 years. We bought him as bombproof for our daughter and he has been beyond wonderful. He has never put a hoof wrong. He has performed at Haydock, Pony Club camps and even made the Gymkhana team. He has given all of our family incredible pleasure. So choosing a retirement livery yard that met his needs and our expectations, was paramount prior to the relocation to Devon. We researched and visited yards. It is hard to pass the baton on to someone else to care for our boy when we love and pamper him so much. We visited Lowertown as a family and we all felt the location and atmosphere was super for our boy. Hannah reassured us and we were put on the waiting list for a stabled package. Our boy has been on Lowertown for almost 2 years and is very very content. We visit him weekly and it’s ideal that you can just turn up. No need to book. Hannah’s care and knowledge is of a very very high standard. We as a family have been very impressed"
